34th PSPB Inter-Unit Golf tournament

The 34th Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB) Inter-Unit Golf Championship was inaugurated here today by Shri R. D. Goyal, Director (Projects), GAIL (India) Limited. The event, which brings together top amateur golfers from oil sector PSUs, is being hosted by India’s No. 1 Natural Gas Company, GAIL (India) Limited.

Speaking on the occasion, Shri R. D. Goyal said, “GAIL has been taking a number of initiatives to promote sports within the organization and at the same time, supporting and promoting sports and players outside the organization as well. Participating in PSPB tournaments is one such important platform.”

The tournament will reach its finale tomorrow at Eagleton Golf Resort, Bangalore and will culminate with the Prize Distribution by Shri M Ravindran, Director (Human Resources), GAIL and President of GAIL Sports Promotion Board.

The four-day golfing extravaganza is one of the most important tournaments on the amateur calendar. Top ranked amateur players such as Shri Udayan Mane, Shri Manu Gandas, Shri Saquib Ahmed, Shri Trishul Chinnappa, Shri Samarth Dwivedi, Shri Simarjeet Singh, Shri Ankur Chadha and Shri Manav Das will be seen in action during the tournament. The tournament will also witness India’s No 1 lady golfer Ms. Gurbani Singh and India’s No 1 junior golfer Shri Viraj Madappa and Shri Piyush Sangwan playing for the Championship.

Some of the prominent players from GAIL who would be vying for the Championship are India’s No 2 lady golfer and reigning Sri Lanka Open Champion Ms. Gauri Monga, reigning National Amateur Champion Shri Pratap Atwal and local golfer Shri Jaibir Singh.

The tournament began with two-day practice rounds on 21st January, 2014, followed by the two-day main event to be played on a stroke play format. The first two days also saw golfers involved in a number of skills competition as a warm-up to the competitive rounds.

Each team comprises of a minimum of three and a maximum of five members. Three best scores will count towards the team’s day total and the two-day aggregate will decide the team championship. An individual stroke play competition will further add to the excitement of the proceedings.

PSPB with the help of its member organisations, over the last two decades, has been encouraging, developing, supervising, coordinating and organizing various sports.
