Today, on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the 145th birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India launched the #SwachhBharat Abhiyaan. A cleanliness drive to kick off the program and a five year campaign to clean up India.
Gail India has donated Rs 270 million (Approximately 4.5 million USD) to the cause and each employee of the company has also pledged 2 hours to the cause every week. We are adopting 4 backward districts in three different states of India for this drive and will be creating sanitation facilities in over 1000 government schools. Employees are starting with the clean up drive today and will continue every week ensuring cleanliness is maintained.
The prime minister of India kicked off the campaign with a surprise visit to a police station, a visit to sanitation workers residential colony and a launch at Rajpath.
