Well, after seeing the CNG as an auomotive fuel success in Mumbai, where GAIL had formed JV with BG, named as “Mahanagar Gas Ltd.” (MGL) in 1995, GAIL decided to form a JV with one of the Oil Marketing Cmpany (OMC) BPCL in1997, because BPCL had an extensive network of Retail Outlets (ROs) in Delhi.
Earlier GAIL had implmented a pilot project for introduction of CNG as an automotive fuel in the 3 cities in India viz. Delhi, MumBai and Vadodara, as authorised by MoP&NG in 1992-93.
Hon’ble Supreme Court was also monitoring the progress of the CNG project in Delhi, in a vehicular pollution related PIL.
